Although ABC, as expected, led the Sunday troops courtesy of top-rated Desperate Housewives (Overnights: 16.7/24; Viewers: 24.39 million; A18-49: 10.7/25 at 9 p.m.), a real bonus for the network was Grey's Anatomy, which increased over last Sunday's already winning debut. Grey's Anatomy averaged a 12.7/19 in the overnights, 18.23 million viewers and a 7.9/19 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m. -- up 12 percent in the overnights, 1.98 million viewers and 10 percent among adults 18-49 from last Sunday (Overnights: 11.3/18; Viewers: 16.25 million; A18-49: 7.2/18 on March 27). Retention out of Desperate Housewives of 76 percent in the overnights, 67 percent in viewers and 74 percent among adults 18-49 was also a considerable improvement over former time period occupant Boston Legal. How do you like that ABC? Another new hit drama!
Earlier in the evening on ABC were America's Funniest Home Videos (Overnights: #2, 5.4/ 9; Viewers: #2, 8.56 million; A18-49: #1, 2.7/ 9), which won the 7 p.m. hour among adults 18-49, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at a typically potent 9.9/15 in the overnights (#2), 14.69 million viewers (#1) and a 5.8/16 among adults 18-49 (#1).
On CBS, although 60 Minutes (Overnights: #1, 8.3/14; Viewers: #1, 10.21 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.9/ 7) and Cold Case (Overnights: #1, 10.9/16; Viewers: #2, 14.58 million; A18-49: #2, 3.1/ 8) remained competitive from 7-9 p.m., theatrical John Q sprung a leak with a 5.1/ 7 in the overnights, 7.60 million viewers (#3) and a 2.2/ 5 among adults 18-49 (#4 at 9 p.m., #3 at 10 p.m.) from 9-11 p.m.
Although NBC's The Contender managed to build by 26 percent among adults 18-49 out of lead-in Dateline, a 4.0/ 6 in the overnights (#4), 5.68 million viewers (#4) and a 2.4/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#4) from 8-9 p.m. is still nothing to crow about. Dateline opened the evening for NBC with a typically modest 5.1/ 8 in the overnights (#3), 7.26 million viewers (#3) and a 1.8/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#3t), while Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Overnights: #2, 9.3/13; Viewers: #2, 12.31 million; A18-49: #2, 3.7/ 9) and a repeat of Crossing Jordan (Overnights: #2, 7.4/11; Viewers: #2, 9.52 million; A18-49: #2, 2.8/ 7) from 9-11 p.m. were close to recent levels.
