"Desperate Housewives" stayed strong, midseason sensation "Grey's Anatomy" continued to build and the two first-year dramas helped ABC crush the ratings competition on Sunday night.
Overall, ABC averaged a 9.9 rating/16 share, easily outdistancing second place CBS' 7.0/12. NBC was a distant third with a 4.4/7, beating the 3.5/6 for FOX. The WB held fifth with a 1.7/3.
ABC also won big among adults 18-49, doing a 6.4 rating in the key demographic. FOX moved up to second with a 2.6 rating, followed closely by the 2.4 for NBC and CBS' 2.3 rating. The WB trailed again with a 1.1 rating.
CBS started the night in first with an 8.2/16 for "60 Minutes." ABC was second with the always popular "America's Funniest Home Videos." NBC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" rip-off "Home Intervention" could muster only a 2.9/6, tied with FOX's average for "King of the Hill" and "Malcolm in the Middle" (the FOX comedies drew more viewers). The WB was last with a repeat of "Charmed."
At 8 p.m., CBS stayed on top with the 8.8/15 for "Cold Case." ABC's repeat of the real "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" was second with a 7.2/12. FOX was third with "The Simpsons" (5.0/9) and the season finale of "Arrested Development" (3.6/6). NBC's "The Contender" lagged in fourth, beating the 2.1/4 for "Charmed" on The WB.
ABC took control in the 9 p.m. hour with the strong 15.1/23 for "Desperate Housewives." NBC moved up to second thanks to the 6.5/10 for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." The first hour of CBS' presentation of "Don't Say a Word" was third with a 5.4/8. FOX aired a "Simpsons" repeat and an encore of the Pamela Anderson comedy "Stacked" and took fourth. On The WB, "Steve Harvey's Big Time Challenge" was fifth with a 1.7/3.
"Grey's Anatomy" reached series highs with a 12.5/20 in the 10 p.m. hour, more than doubling up the numbers for CBS' movie. An encore of the "Revelations" premiere on NBC did a 4.9/8.
